At least 281 people have died and 3,900 have been injured by the earthquake that shook Colombia last Monday, according to the director of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), David Tamayo, in statements to the press. The Colombian president, Abelardo de la Espriella, has announced a plan for the reconstruction of the 44,000 homes affected by the earthquake. In a press conference, accompanied by the Minister of Housing, Jaime Beltrán, and the main construction businessmen, De la Espriella assured that they will work hand in hand with the private sector and local governments to not leave alone the families who have lost their homes. Almost four days after the earthquake, firefighters continue with search and rescue operations for survivors. The government has informed that it will only receive rescuers from four countries allied with the president: the United States, Israel, Ecuador, and El Salvador, and has justified that they are the ones that meet the necessary international standards. The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has reported that a citizen with dual nationality has died in the earthquake, while the number of nationals unaccounted for has decreased from 75 to 12.

Daniela had already been buried for several hours when someone, from a pile of rubble, asked her name. She also shouted her son’s name. And then her father’s name. That was how the rescuers knew that the woman they would end up pulling out alive was the same whose face and blonde hair had been circulating for almost two days on a poster: “Wanted. Daniela Andrea Largo Sánchez, 32 years old. Missing in Pereira during the tremor.”
