The new Madrid layout that winds through IFEMA has been described in various ways, although the connotation of the adjectives used goes in the same direction. Some label it as wild. Others, like James Vowles, say it is a “car breaker” circuit, with the data in hand: the Formula 3 test held a couple of weeks ago caused a total of 19 red flags and three broken chassis.

‘La Monumental’ is not the steepest banked corner in F1 history, but with 550 meters of chord, it is the longest. Its 13.5 degrees of banking surpass those of the Indianapolis oval, but do not reach the 18 degrees of the last turn at Zandvoort (Netherlands). At that point, the key elements that will make the difference will be grip and bravery, usually connecting the first with the second. “We all expect safety cars, red flags, and yellow flags to appear,” highlights Carlos Sainz, who acts as the grand prix ambassador.

F1 in Madrid 45 years later
Madrid hosts a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the first time since 1981. It will do so on a semi-urban circuit in the Hortaleza district, northeast of the capital. The layout, located around Ifema, has a planned capacity of 350,000 spectators, with its 110,000 tickets sold months ago.
