Man injured on 30% of his body in fire at his home in Madrid

A 67-year-old man was seriously injured early Monday morning in a fire at his home in Madrid, Emergencias Madrid reported. Due to the fire, which started for unknown reasons in the kitchen of the apartment, the victim suffers burns on 30% of his body and is admitted to the burn unit at La Paz hospital.

The fire was reported around eleven at night in a home located on the fourth floor of a four-story building at number 105 Laguna Street, in the Carabanchel district of Madrid. For unknown reasons, the flames started in the kitchen and affected the entire room, from appliances to furniture, explained in a video shared by Emergencias the firefighter sergeant of the Madrid City Council, Francisco Roldán.

The sergeant detailed that upon arrival, the fire was “fully developed” and the flames were breaking out through the facade towards an inner courtyard. During the extinguishing efforts, they were informed of the presence of a man inside the home. He was the only occupant of the house.

At that moment, the teams split into two groups: one in charge of extinguishing the fire and the other of searching and rescuing the man, whom they found inside the bedroom. After being evacuated to the street, he was attended to by Samur personnel.

The man suffered burns on 30% of his body and severe smoke inhalation poisoning, so the medical staff proceeded “to isolate the airway and connect to mechanical ventilation,” said Carlos Rodríguez, Samur supervisor, who added that the patient was stabilized and transferred to the burn unit at La Paz hospital. Meanwhile, the firefighters finished putting out the fire and managed to prevent it from spreading to any other home in the block.
