Marcos Llorente, player of Atlético de Madrid, has suddenly announced his retirement from the Spanish national team, with which he recently became world champion in the past 2026 World Cup, where Spain defeated Argentina in the final. “After a long time thinking it over, I have decided to close my chapter with the National Team,” the player stated in a farewell letter on social media.
“I am aware that I am still young and that, perhaps, if I kept doing things well, I would still have years left to keep playing with this jersey. I know many of you will not understand it and, surely, I wouldn’t have understood it from the outside either. But it is a personal decision, very well thought out and, above all, very heartfelt,” he adds.

“Regardless of whether I had gone to the World Cup or not, or whether we had won or not, this decision was already made. I can only be infinitely grateful to all the people I have met over these years who have made it possible for my family and me to live unique and unforgettable moments,” adds the footballer.
“I take with me everything I have lived, but above all, these last 52 days. With a wonderful group that fought until the end to keep Spain at the top. And they did. It has been a pride to represent my country and be part of this history,” concludes Llorente, who has been capped 27 times. He played in two World Cups and was part of the champion team in the one held in the USA last summer.
