Seven people have been injured, one of them seriously, this Sunday night after an explosion occurred in a bar located on Villajoyosa Street, in the Madrid district of Villaverde, according to the capital’s Emergency Services.

The most seriously injured is a male between 37 and 40 years old who had “inhalation burns and burns on the body surface,” so he had to be intubated and transferred to La Paz Hospital, Carlos Rodríguez, supervisor of the Municipal Emergency and Rescue Assistance Service (SAMUR), specified.
Two other “moderate” injured, who had burns covering between 20% and 22% of their body surface, were also transferred to La Paz Hospital; another, in the same condition, was evacuated to Getafe Hospital, while two other “moderate but less serious patients” were taken to the 12 de Octubre Hospital. “A seventh patient we treated in situ was discharged on site,” Rodríguez added.

The Madrid City Firefighters received the call at 11:00 p.m. this Sunday alerting them about the explosion, informing them that there were victims inside the establishment, so several units were activated.

Once at the scene, the personnel were able to verify the “presence of several victims who were already outside” and the existence of a “small fire,” which they extinguished shortly after arriving, Julio Rodríguez, chief of the Madrid City Firefighters’ Guard, reported.
“There was no explosive atmosphere and, according to what they told us later, the people working there were making a repair in an old refrigeration room where that explosive atmosphere could have been generated, which mainly caused material damage,” Rodríguez added.
The National Police have taken charge of the investigation of what happened. The operation also involved personnel from the Madrid Municipal Police and the Medical Emergency Service of the Community of Madrid (SUMMA112).
