Mexico fully enters a new electoral process that will renew the country’s political landscape. This Thursday legally marks the start of the road to the 2027 elections, which will culminate nine months later with the election day on Sunday, June 6 of next year. More than 21,000 public offices are at stake, including the governorships of 17 of the 32 States, the Chamber of Deputies, and the 16 boroughs of Mexico City. According to the National Electoral Institute (INE), about 102 million Mexicans will be called to the polls, an unprecedented registry for which the electoral authority foresees a record installation of 176,141 polling stations, more than 6,000 additional to those that operated during the 2024 presidential elections.

The battle for the States
The 2027 electoral process will renew the governorships of 17 States in the country and will test the ruling party’s dominance of the last six years: from 2018 to 2024, Morena went from four to 24 state governorships. Of the 17 federal entities at stake in 2027, 12 are governed by the ruling party (Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Nayarit, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tlaxcala, and Zacatecas), three by PAN (Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, and Querétaro); one by Movimiento Ciudadano (Nuevo León) and one by the Green Party (San Luis Potosí).

Two new political parties
The 2027 elections will also be the stage for the presentation of two new political forces: PAZ and Somos México. While the first, a party linked to the evangelical church that embodies the third version of PES (Social Encounter Party), is led by Armando González Escoto and has offered cordiality to Morena; Somos México presents itself as an opposition group born from the pink tide, the movement that at the end of 2022 took to the streets against López Obrador’s electoral reform and in defense of the INE. Both join the six parties with national registration: National Action Party (PAN), Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Labor Party (PT), Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM), Citizens’ Movement (MC), and Morena.
