September is the month when thousands of workers return from summer vacation and also when many of them take stock of the holidays left in the year to plan new getaways. In 2026, according to the work calendar published in the BOE, three national holidays remain to be celebrated: October 12, which this year falls on a Monday; December 25 (Christmas), which will be Friday; and December 8, which falls on a Tuesday. In the first two cases, workers will have a long weekend. But the third is different.

Since December 8 falls on a Tuesday, those who can take Monday off will enjoy a long weekend. And this will be the general trend in eight autonomous communities where December 6, the national holiday for Constitution Day, has been moved to Monday the 7th because it falls on a Sunday. Thus, in Andalusia, Aragon, Castile and León, Cantabria, Madrid, Murcia, Extremadura, and La Rioja, most workers will be able to combine up to four days of rest (December 5, 6, 7, and 8). Also in December, the 3rd of the last month of the year will be a holiday in Navarra.
In November, another nine communities will have another long weekend since the 1st of this month (All Saints’ Day) falls on a Sunday and Andalusia, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Castile and León, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Extremadura, and Navarra have moved the holiday to Monday, November 2.
Other holidays of the year
The year 2026 has, as established by law, 14 national holidays, of which two are set by each city council. Of the remaining 12, there are nine national holidays that are mandatory for all autonomous communities and cannot be substituted, unless they fall on a Sunday. The nine mandatory national holidays are: January 1; Good Friday (which in 2027 will be April 3); May 1 (Labor Day); August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin); October 12 (National Day); November 1 (All Saints’ Day); December 6 (Constitution Day); December 8 (Immaculate Conception); and December 25 (Christmas).
Additionally, there are three other national holidays that are optional. That is, they can be adopted by the communities or replaced by other days preferred by the autonomous governments. These are January 6 (Epiphany); Maundy Thursday (which in 2026 will be April 2); and a third day to choose between March 19 (Saint Joseph) or July 25 (Saint James the Apostle).
Regarding the holidays set by the communities, between September and December there are days left to enjoy in practically all territories. But the ones that will create long weekends will be Friday, September 11 in Catalonia and Friday, October 9 in the Valencian Community, which will enjoy a four-day weekend because it also connects with the national holiday on October 12, the following Monday.
