The fire declared around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the surroundings of the Sierra de Carrascoy-El Valle natural park, in the Murcian district of Garres y Lages, remains active and has already devastated 177 hectares. The night has been tough in the area where, however, the greatest danger, that the fire would reach the homes in the locality, was ruled out late in the afternoon. The neighbors who were evacuated from their homes as a precaution, around a hundred, have already been able to return to their houses.
According to the central Government delegate in the Region of Murcia, Francisco Lucas, more than 200 military personnel and 70 resources from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) have worked all night to extinguish the fire. The president of the autonomous community, Fernando López Miras, requested the intervention of this special unit in the mid-afternoon due to the fire’s virulence. At that time, the tension was at its highest because the flames were just meters away from the homes in the upper area of Garres y Lages, a district that belongs to Murcia city and is located in the Southern Mountain Range, about 5 kilometers from the city, with around 7,500 inhabitants. The fire was especially close to infrastructures such as the Antonio Díaz public school, but, as confirmed early Wednesday by the local district mayor to the regional public radio, the forecast is that the classrooms will open normally this Wednesday.
For today, the first aerial resources, which could not work during the night, have begun to rejoin the extinction efforts. Their intervention, sources agree, will be key to stabilizing the fire, as the active spots are in mountainous areas, very steep and difficult to access by land.

For now, there is one helicopter operating in the area, and more aerial resources will progressively join throughout the morning, according to the regional president.
