King Felipe VI will accompany the Spanish national football team in the World Cup match against the Uruguayan team on June 26 in Guadalajara (Mexico), according to the Royal Household. La Zarzuela has reported that Felipe VI has already informed the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, of his intention to attend the sporting event. He has also told the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, who also invited the King to attend some of the matches.
Felipe VI will attend the Spanish national team’s third match in the World Cup, which will have previously faced Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia at the Atlanta stadium in the United States. The match against Uruguay on June 26 will be the team’s first on Mexican soil.
On March 18, it was revealed that the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, had sent a letter to the King inviting the monarch to visit her country to attend the World Cup, which will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. In her letter, Sheinbaum highlighted that the World Cup “constitutes a favorable opportunity to evoke the depth and unique character of the ties between Mexico and Spain, forged by a historical brotherhood and supported by the shared legacy of language, culture, and collective memory, which is full of great displays of solidarity, empathy, and a humanistic vision between our peoples,” La Zarzuela explained at the time. The Royal Household “warmly received this personal invitation” to Felipe VI to visit Mexico “within the framework of the fraternal friendship relationship between the two countries.” This Monday, Felipe VI accepted Sheinbaum’s invitation and informed her that he will attend the match between Spain and Uruguay.
