Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, former Morena leader and son of former president López Obrador, is the latest Mexican politician to have his U.S. visa canceled. His name joins that of at least 50 politicians, including governors Alfonso Durazo of Sonora, Américo Villarreal of Tamaulipas, and Marina del Pilar of Baja California, whose immigration documents have been withdrawn by the U.S. government in recent months, in what Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, considers an attempt to interfere in the country’s political life. “It is not the same for all countries if its meaning were related to crime […] we can review what happens in other Latin American countries and what happens in our country and this has a meaning of interference in Mexican politics,” she explained during her morning press conference this Friday.

The son of López Obrador announced on August 13 that the U.S. government decided to revoke his visa. Through a letter addressed to Donald Trump in which he denied that U.S. authorities have evidence against him of “any moral or criminal act,” Andy maintained that the cancellation of his immigration document is a political and propagandistic decision. President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized Washington’s decision and assured that there is no ongoing investigation against the former Morena leader.
Alex Tonatiuh Márquez Hernández
Márquez Hernández has become the first official in Claudia Sheinbaum’s cabinet to lose his visa. He is accused by U.S. authorities of the crime of fuel theft. According to Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity, in nine years he bought five luxury watches totaling nearly eight million pesos; an amount that does not match his income. On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Márquez was removed from his position as head of customs investigation at the National Customs Agency of Mexico (Anam).
José Luis Dagnino
He is the mayor of the municipality of San Felipe, in Mexicali. Dagnino was heading to San Bernardino, California, to participate in an official event. However, he was detained at Customs and Border Protection offices for almost 24 hours. He returned to Mexicali and confirmed the revocation of his visa and stated that no official explanation was given.
Óscar Eduardo Castro Castro
The mayor of Puerto Peñasco, in Sonora, found out that his visa had been revoked when he tried to cross into the United States, along with his wife and children, through the Lukeville checkpoint connecting to Arizona. U.S. authorities have not clarified the decision.
Alfonso Durazo Montaño
The governor of the State of Sonora has been accused by the Donald Trump administration of alleged links to organized crime, according to an exclusive by ‘Los Angeles Times’ and ‘Puente News’. Paloma Terán, director of Communication for the Sonoran government, has called the information “completely false.” The politician was chief spokesperson and private secretary to Vicente Fox between 2000 and 2006. He has been governor of the border state since 2021.
Américo Villarreal Anaya
Like Durazo, the governor of Tamaulipas has been accused of alleged links to organized crime in the exclusive report by ‘Los Angeles Times’ and ‘Puente News’. The director of Communication of Tamaulipas has categorically and strongly denied the information: “There are no documents, files, resolutions, or verifiable evidence that support what was published.” The same report states that both Durazo and Villarreal would have entered the country under a “special authorization usually reserved for witnesses cooperating with justice.”
Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda
The governor of Baja California announced that the United States had revoked her visa and that of her husband, Carlos Torres Torres, on May 10, 2025. Ávila Olmeda states that to date she does not know the reason for the U.S. government’s decision. Recently, she confirmed that she is in the process of divorcing Torres Torres.
Carlos Torres Torres
Torres, who held honorary positions in the Tijuana city council and in the Executive Power of Baja California, resigned from his duties after his visa was withdrawn. He is being investigated by Mexican and U.S. authorities for his alleged involvement in crimes such as tax evasion, money laundering, and fuel theft.

The mayor of Mexicali learned about her visa situation when her husband, Luis Samuel Guerrero Delgado, tried to cross into California on August 8, 2025, and the authorities took away his visa. It was then that Guerrero Delgado was informed of the revocation of his wife’s visa.

The husband of the Morena mayor of Mexicali works as an official of the State Commission for Protection against Health Risks in Baja California. With this case, at least four visas have been revoked for officials from the Cachanilla State.

The mayor of Nogales, Sonora, Juan Francisco Gim, confirmed the cancellation of his visa during the first days of August 2025. “I remain calm and with a clear conscience,” he said through a post on his Facebook account in which he also assured that it was an “administrative process.”

The former governor of Guerrero said, in an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva, that he was informed of the revocation of his visa on July 31, 2025, 10 days after criticizing tariffs on tomatoes at an event in Acapulco.
Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM)

In September 2025, the federal deputy of the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) was detained for up to 12 hours by customs agents at the Matamoros crossing, in Tamaulipas, with Brownsville, Texas, when he tried to cross the border. U.S. authorities have not clarified the reasons for the detention. Initially, López denied what happened.

Hernán José Vega Burgos
He is a Yucatecan lawyer known as El padrote de Progreso for alleged links to a sexual exploitation ring. The United States canceled his visa in February 2025. He serves as a local magistrate in Yucatán.
