Visitors who have come to run or enjoy the natural space have found a notice at the entrance indicating the indefinite closure until further notice. “For sanitation reasons, the Viveros de Coyoacán park will remain closed until further notice. Sincerely: the administration,” reads an image shared on social media.

According to a post on X by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the damage caused by the rains on May 11 and 12 has led to the closure due to the rise in the levels of the Magdalena River that runs through the park. Authorities have opted for the closure to begin cleaning, dredging, mud removal, and tree inspection work.

Additionally, the latent risk of falling tall trees and possible landslides on the athletics track and surrounding areas has been identified. The reopening is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, “provided that there are adequate safety conditions for visitors,” according to a Semarnat statement.

The Viveros de Coyoacán are one of the most emblematic green lungs of the Mexican capital. The park and nursery cover 39 hectares and are located at the western end of the Coyoacán Borough. Access to the natural area is from the Viveros station on Metro Line 3.
In this space, more than 20 forest species grow and are protected, such as the ahuehuete, jacaranda, white cedar, ash, and various types of pine. The Magdalena River runs along its western side and is currently undergoing a long process of decontamination and rehabilitation.
