Iceland has rejected in a referendum to resume negotiations to join the European Union. And it is not the only one: wealthy countries like Norway and Switzerland also remain outside the Union, although they are closely linked to it. The Icelandic result reopens the debate about the attractiveness of the EU among the most prosperous countries and about the future of European enlargement.
