The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office reported this Friday the discovery of Edith Guadalupe Valdés, a 21-year-old woman who had been missing since last Wednesday in Iztapalapa, found dead in an apartment in the Benito Juárez Borough, in downtown Mexico City. “The Prosecutor’s Office is conducting this investigation under the femicide protocol,” the Public Ministry states in a document shared on social media.

Valdés’s family reported in recent days that the woman was last seen on Wednesday when she went out for a job interview. The released images show the young woman traveling to the downtown Borough on a motorcycle. The Public Ministry noted that through the procedures – involving the video surveillance systems team – they managed to establish “the victim’s last known route” to the apartment. The inspection of the place began in the early hours of this Friday. “From 5:30 a.m., Prosecutor’s Office experts began processing the site and the body,” the document states.

One of the victim’s relatives, Tláloc Aguilar, criticized the lack of information from the authorities in recent days (“we did this work ourselves”) and stated that on Wednesday morning they were only informed about the discovery of a body in a bag in the building. The family learned the results of the forensic tests at the doors of the capital’s Prosecutor’s Office.
Aguilar revealed shortly before the Public Ministry’s resolution that the family had evidence that the young woman had entered the building on Wednesday afternoon. “At first, they [the building staff] told us she hadn’t entered. We brought them the photos and information we gathered, [and then] they told us she did enter, but they didn’t know if she left or not,” Aguilar said with a trembling voice. The relative pointed out that the family notified the Public Ministry since Wednesday itself: “And we never received support […] We gave them photos and documents.” Aguilar stated that the authorities did not respond to the family’s demands until this Friday, after they decided to block Eje 6 in the capital, one of the main roads that runs through part of the south of the city from east to west.
The Public Ministry states that it became aware of the disappearance last Thursday, a day after the date indicated by the family and the search notice shared on social media. “This institution immediately activated the corresponding search and investigation protocols,” the capital’s Prosecutor’s Office affirms in its statement.
