The Civil Guard has completed the investigation related to the crime that occurred on May 28 in Fuenmayor (La Rioja), which ended the life of a 26-year-old young man and the strangulation assault on the wife of the detainee in this case of gender-based violence. The perpetrator, a 31-year-old man, remains in prison after the judge of the Logroño Court of First Instance ordered provisional detention without bail for a crime of homicide and another in the degree of attempt for trying to kill his partner. The intervention of a neighbor prevented this second homicide.
The proceedings carried out by the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard of La Rioja have made it possible to clarify the causes of what happened and reconstruct the circumstances that triggered this case. The origin lies in the relationship that, apparently, the victims maintained and which motivated the detainee’s plan to end their lives.
In this way, the aggressor convinced his partner to arrange a meeting with the 26-year-old young man in Fuenmayor. That day he traveled by car accompanied by the woman and her young son. Once there, he used the girl’s mobile phone to send the victim the exact location and set the meeting there, a secluded place in this Riojan municipality.
The victim arrived on foot and approached the vehicle. The alleged murderer told him to go to a bench to talk. “Taking advantage of the fact that he was facing away and could not react, he suddenly accelerated and ran him over,” the Civil Guard points out. Then, the aggressor got out of the car to continue the attack. Although his partner tried to stop him, the man strangled her for the first time until she lost consciousness. Then, the attacker took a blunt object from the street (part of the furniture broken by the run-over) and hit the young man until he killed him.
Then, he attacked his partner again and tried to suffocate her for the second time. However, a neighbor who witnessed the scene reprimanded him and managed to make him stop. It was at that moment that the first Civil Guard patrol arrived and arrested the aggressor.
The woman was not registered in the comprehensive monitoring system in cases of gender-based violence (VioGén system).
