Woman arrested for starting a fire by lighting a fire to cook

The Mossos d’Esquadra have arrested a 56-year-old woman accused of causing a fire that affected 1,200 square meters in Llançà (Girona) on August 2, after concluding that she started it through negligence by lighting a fire in a forested area to cook. According to a statement released today by the Catalan police, the detainee, 56 years old and with a record of other incidents, was arrested last Tuesday, August 11, in La Jonquera (Girona), as the alleged perpetrator of a forest fire crime.

The fire, which affected a total of 1,200 square meters and was extinguished a few hours later, started on August 2, around five in the afternoon, in a wooded area of Can Ras, in Llançà, very close to where a woman was camping. The Mossos d’Esquadra and the Rural Agents opened an investigation that determined the fire was caused by the negligence of someone who lit a fire in a forested area to cook.

The Rural Agents found several clues about the origin of the fire, which allowed the Mossos to identify a woman as the alleged perpetrator of the fire, leading to her arrest. The Mossos and the Rural Agents have emphasized that in Catalonia it is prohibited to light fires in forested areas without express authorization, regardless of the purpose, from March 15 to October 15.
