A woman dies after receiving an “accidental” shot from her husband while hunting in Palencia

A 56-year-old woman died this Tuesday after being shot “accidentally” by her husband in the town of Hérmedes de Cerrato (Palencia). The deceased, originally from Valladolid, was with him practicing hunting in this area of the south of the Palencia province when the incident occurred. The Civil Guard investigation has so far ruled out that it is an episode of gender violence and attributes it to an accident, pending further inquiries. The woman was initially attended by emergency services in serious condition and finally died despite medical attention. The victim was named Raquel García and worked for the Municipal Sports Foundation (FMD) of the Valladolid City Council, whose spokespersons have expressed their condolences for the tragedy.

The first official information indicated that the couple was hunting in the Hérmedes de Cerrato area when the shot occurred. “At the moment the Civil Guard units arrived, the victim was serious but conscious. According to the initial investigations carried out by the Armed Institute, it would be ruled out that the events are related to an episode of gender violence and the main hypothesis suggests that it could be a hunting accident,” the Civil Guard reported in a statement.

The accident occurred on Tuesday morning and the woman from Valladolid died late in the day despite the medical attention received, as she suffered very serious injuries. Sources from the government sub-delegation in Palencia detail that “the shot was in the lateral part of the abdomen” and that both “usually hunted together, both with an active permit.”

The first inquiries into the death revealed that the victim was Raquel García, an FMD employee. The manager of this entity, Santiago Hidalgo, thus expressed his regret for what happened: “Raquel had been an instructor of leisure and free time activities with seniors at the Municipal Sports Foundation of Valladolid for 30 years; she did not work directly with us but rather through a series of contracts with companies we have subcontracted.”

The municipal Sports Councilor, Mayte Martínez (PP), joined Hidalgo in words of affection towards García’s family and sadness for what happened. “From the social media of the Municipal Foundation, and after having also informed the mayor, we express, as it could not be otherwise, our condolences to the family for the death of this worker,” she specified, adding that she personally did not know her because she was not a “direct employee” of the City Council but an employee of various companies subcontracted by the City Council. Raquel García had “very good references,” according to Martínez, and was “very much loved at the Foundation,” for which she worked giving classes in the city’s sports centers or pavilions.
