The best tap water filter

We have chosen the Brita On Tap Pro V-MF tap water filter as the best in the comparison, as it eliminates bad tastes and has a panel to know when to change the cartridge.

Drinking tap water is not something that can be done equally everywhere, as the taste and even the quality of the liquid vary greatly in each area or country. For this reason, in many places, buying bottled water is the main option for safe hydration. However, there are other options that avoid the massive purchase of plastic bottles: water filters that are placed on taps and are capable of purifying a large amount of impurities, bacteria, and other substances, such as chlorine or lead.

To help you find the best solution for your home, at EL PAÍS Escaparate we have tested four water filters. In each one, we have analyzed its filtering capacity and the ease of its installation. All this in order to find the best and most convenient for most needs.

What tap water filters have we chosen and how have we tested them?

When choosing the tap water filters for this comparison, we focused on recognized brands in this field that already have the trust of many people. Then, when choosing the specific models, we found differences in filtering capacity and the number of adapters included for different tap sizes. Therefore, our final selection is: Brita, Waterdrop, Geyser, and Philips.

To test these water filters, we started by installing them on different types of household taps to check their compatibility and ease of assembly. Afterwards, we evaluated their real effectiveness: we compared filtered and unfiltered water in terms of taste, odor, and clarity.

Over several weeks of continuous use, we observed how each filter performed in terms of durability and performance. We also checked the ease of replacing the cartridge and keeping the device clean. Finally, we paid attention to possible changes in water pressure and speed during daily use.

Why you can trust me?

I am a journalist specialized in product analysis and, in recent years, I have tested and compared dozens of devices and accessories for media such as EL PAÍS. My evaluation method starts from something very specific: understanding what a product truly offers in relation to its cost. Not only in specific tests, but also in daily use, because that is where the details that make a difference are perceived. Beyond the specifications, I am interested in how it performs in practice, how consistent it is over time, and what limitations appear when you integrate it into your routine. Because, in the end, a good product is not the most striking, but the one that best justifies its price in everyday life. That is the criterion with which I build each recommendation.

What is the best tap water filter?

The Brita On Tap Pro V-MF tap water filter is the one that has convinced me the most due to its ease of installation, the clear improvement in water taste, and its three modes of use. The digital counter is very practical, although its capacity is smaller and the price is high.

How does it purify water?

Because this brand’s filter jugs have become so popular, I couldn’t resist trying the Brita On Tap Pro V-MF water filter. The first impression was that it was very easy to install: first, you have to open a lid, where there is a battery that activates the included digital counter, which indicates the 600 liters it is capable of filtering —it has the lowest capacity in the comparison—. Then, the filter is incorporated on the right side and, next, the part that is placed on the tap aerator is unscrewed —in my case, it’s a standard tap, so it fit perfectly the first time; although it comes with different adapters—. After this, all that remains is to adjust it and start using it.

Once installed, and although it is a bulky filter, it does not interfere with daily kitchen tasks, regardless of whether you have a single, small sink —as is my case—. The activated carbon included in the filter may cause the water to come out a little darker than usual at first, but this only lasts a few seconds.

One of the things I liked most about this model is that it offers three modes of use: filtered water; unfiltered water with a straight stream —the lever turns upwards— for washing hands; and unfiltered water with a shower function for washing food. All work perfectly and it is very useful not to use the filter when not necessary, especially when washing vegetables or washing dishes. The flow, in general, is fluid, although on some occasions the filtered water flow was a bit scarce, and this was especially noticeable when filling water bottles.

Regarding filtration, what is most noticeable is the taste: I did the test of drinking a glass of filtered water and another unfiltered, and although I thought it wouldn’t be noticeable, it is true that purified water tastes better and even comes out a little clearer. The best part, without a doubt, is that it incorporates a screen that indicates filter wear and warns when it’s time to change it. On the other hand, you have to pay for all of the above, as its price is high.

Why do we recommend it?

  • Better water taste and color.
  • Three modes of use.
  • Does not interfere with the sink.
  • Easy to install.
  • Its screen informs about filter wear.

To improve:

  • Filters only 600 liters.
  • Water may come out black for the first few seconds due to activated carbon.
  • Flow may be scarce in filter mode.
  • It has a high price.

Other alternatives to the best tap water filter

Waterdrop WD-FC-01 tap water filtration system

The overall impression with the Waterdrop WD-FC-01 tap water filter has been very positive: it visibly improves the taste of water and inspires confidence thanks to its certifications. It is easy to install, does not reduce pressure, and its filter lasts much longer than average. It does not eliminate limescale, but as a balanced and durable option, it works very well.

How does it purify water?

My experience with the Waterdrop WD-FC-01 tap water filter has been almost as positive as with the winning model in the comparison. In the box, the manufacturer assures that it is capable of reducing chlorine and lead in water by up to 93%, as well as other harmful substances that may be present in the liquid. To support this claim, it has international certifications such as NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine, taste, and odor reduction, and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free material. This, without a doubt, provides a lot of confidence and safety in its use.

In fact, during the tests, I was able to verify that the taste of the water improves greatly with this filter. Even so, as with the other models in the comparison, it is not entirely effective at removing limescale. While this is not a major problem for consumption, it is ruled out as an alternative to prevent limescale buildup in coffee makers and other appliances.

This filter comes with five adapters, from 0.77 to 0.89 inches, making it compatible with most taps. It should only be noted that it is not suitable for pull-out, hand-held, spray, or sensor taps. Beyond that, it is a very easy device to install —without affecting the jet pressure— and it is also simple to change the filter when due. In this regard, the brand reports that it is capable of purifying up to 1,000 liters, making it one of the most durable.

Why do we recommend it?

  • Filters up to 1,000 liters.
  • International certifications.
  • Improves water taste.
  • Five adapters for different tap sizes.
  • Easy to install.

To improve:

  • Does not completely eliminate limescale.
  • Less compatibility with different taps.

Geyser Euro tap water filter

If the fundamental aspect is to forget about replacement for a long time, the Geyser Euro water filter plays in another league: it filters up to 3,000 liters and clearly improves the taste of water, in addition to eliminating bacteria and metals. The change indicator helps, but its compatibility is more limited and the price is difficult to justify compared to more balanced alternatives.

How does it purify water?

There is no doubt that the main advantage of the Geyser Euro water filter is that it can purify up to 3,000 liters of liquid, far exceeding the other models in the comparison. In this process, it eliminates bad tastes —as I have been able to verify in the analyses—, but also bacteria and metals that may be present in the water. In this section, it is at the level or even slightly above the two previous models. In addition, I liked that it incorporates a filter change indicator so that there is no need to worry about calculating future times.

This filter incorporates a 22 mm adapter with an external thread to connect to most taps without problems. In any case, and something that I found very positive, is that, if the device does not fit a tap, an order for the exact size can be placed directly with the brand. Even so, its compatibility is more limited compared to other models. The worst part, however, is that its price is one of the highest in this comparison, making it difficult to justify the cost.

Why do we recommend it?

  • Filters up to 3,000 liters of water.
  • An adapter can be ordered for any tap.
  • Eliminates bad tastes.
  • Has a filter change indicator.

To improve:

  • More limited compatibility.
  • High price.

Philips tap water filter

The experience with the Philips water filter has been correct in its essentials: it installs in seconds, improves taste, and its operation is very intuitive. However, it requires more frequent filter changes than expected and its compatibility with different taps is limited, which puts it behind more durable and versatile options.

How does it purify water?

The Philips water filter performs filtration using a three-layer system, which includes the activated carbon method. In addition, it is very easy to install on the tap, as it comes with six adapters for different sizes, between 15 and 24 millimeters. Installation is done with just one click, and it is a bit smaller and has a different design than the previously analyzed model. Its use is as simple as pressing a button to switch between purified water mode or direct tap water.

It is also true that, during the tests, we noticed that the water tasted better: it is more similar to mineral or bottled water. However, despite having a purification capacity of up to 1,000 liters —according to the manufacturer—, I found that it requires more frequent filter changes than other models. In addition, I have noticed that it is not capable of completely eliminating limescale. The worst part, however, is that its compatibility with taps is limited.

Why do we recommend it?

  • Filters up to 1,000 liters.
  • Has six adapters for different tap sizes.
  • Better water taste.
  • Has two modes of use.

To improve:

  • The tap needs to be changed frequently.
  • Does not completely eliminate limescale.
  • Less compatibility with taps.

Frequently asked questions about tap water filters

Are tap water filters worth it?

The acquisition of these devices represents a smart investment for any home. These systems eliminate the taste of chlorine and reduce the presence of sediments or heavy metals that often travel through old pipes. Their installation is very simple, and the cost per liter is drastically lower than that of other alternatives. If you are looking to improve the quality of your basic supply without complex renovations, this accessory offers immediate results and undeniable convenience.

Is it good to filter tap water?

Performing this process provides direct benefits for both personal well-being and the durability of household appliances. Although public supply in countries like Spain complies with strict sanitary controls, domestic treatment eliminates residual impurities that affect the aroma of infusions or coffee. In addition, it reduces excessive hardness in areas with a lot of limescale, which protects kidney health and prevents blockages in coffee makers or electric kettles. It is an excellent preventive measure that guarantees purer consumption.

Is it better to filter tap water or buy bottled water?

On an ecological and economic level, home filtration wins by a landslide. The use of purifiers avoids the massive generation of plastic waste and the effort of carrying heavy packages from the supermarket. While bottled liquid represents a high recurring expense, the maintenance of a cartridge lasts several months. Similar purity is obtained from the kitchen, with the advantage of always having an unlimited and sustainable fresh flow.

What is better: boiled water or filtered water?

Boiling only serves to eliminate microorganisms or bacteria through extreme heat, but it does not remove solid particles or chemical contaminants. For its part, filtration technology retains microplastics and volatile substances through activated carbon, something that heat does not achieve. For daily consumption in cities, the filtered option is superior as it immediately improves organoleptic properties. Except in sanitary emergency situations where pathogens exist, a good filter is the most effective solution.
