The celebration of EL PAÍS’s 50th anniversary begins this Friday at Matadero Madrid, an open space in the capital. May 1, 2, and 3 concentrate more than 70 activities involving 150 participants. Access to most events is free and obtained through registration on the Festival’s website, where all events and their availability can be checked. Throughout this week, people who reserved tickets have been contacted to confirm their attendance. Tickets released at the start of each session will be given to those queuing at the entrance of the venue where each activity takes place. Access will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
In addition to the variety of scheduled events, numerous activities will take place in the Plaza of Matadero Madrid, which will remain open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with free and open access until full capacity is reached and no prior registration is required. Among them is the Moments Exhibition, curated by Marisa Flórez, featuring 50 large-format images that offer a photographic journey through the last 50 years. There are also family workshops and ones on typographic landscapes, as well as dining areas—from breakfast to dinner—spaces for rest and reading, a kiosk created for the occasion, a bookstore where several festival speakers will sign books… Three days in which this newspaper meets its readers in a celebratory atmosphere through an event dedicated to journalism, culture, ideas, and conversation.
The first two nights, Friday and Saturday, will be closed with free concerts upon prior registration through the festival website in the same plaza. On the 1st, La Banda Sabinera will perform, and on the 2nd, Israel Fernández, Dora Postigo, and Lela Soto will take the stage. Activities held in indoor spaces—Auditorio-Casa del Lector, Columnas-Central de Diseño room, Plató-Cineteca room, Azcona-Cineteca room, and Borau-Cineteca room—guided tours of the exhibition, children’s workshops, and concerts require free ticket reservations. A large screen will broadcast some live events in the Plaza.
Additionally, Cadena SER joins the celebration of EL PAÍS’s 50th anniversary at Matadero Madrid with one of the most iconic segments of the leading weekend radio program. A vivir que son dos días, hosted by Javier del Pino, will broadcast live from Sala Borau an extended version of the Correspondents’ Roundtable. Its regular collaborators Mathieu de Taillac, Ana Fuentes, Hans Günter Kellner, and Sarah Morris will talk with historical personalities who have marked the 50 years of this newspaper’s history.
