The visit of Isabel Díaz Ayuso to Mexico has rekindled a diplomatic tension that Spain had been trying to ease in recent months. During her tour, the president of the Community of Madrid praised the figure of Hernán Cortés and defended a positive reading of the conquest, a discourse that contrasts with the institutional recognition of the abuses committed during colonization, recently expressed by King Felipe VI. Ayuso’s words have caused discomfort in Mexico and have provoked the public reaction of President Claudia Sheinbaum, reigniting the political clash.

According to journalist Juan Diego Quesada, who has closely followed both Mexican politics and Ayuso’s figure, this trip largely responds to an ideological positioning strategy. “It is a way to place her discourse to the right of the right,” he explains, pointing to an identity narrative that connects with Vox’s theses and other international conservative leaderships. Quesada also emphasizes that Ayuso acts in a personal capacity, influenced by her environment, and not as a representative of the entire Popular Party or Spanish foreign policy.
Paradoxically, this clash may have a unifying effect among actors who until now maintained distant positions. “It will unite the King, the Government, and Claudia Sheinbaum, because now they have a very identifiable common enemy,” Quesada points out. In this context, the controversy threatens to re-ideologize relations between Spain and Mexico, a “complex and multi-layered” relationship, just when it was being attempted to be rebuilt through diplomatic and institutional means.
