A patrol of the Mossos d’Esquadra from Girona that was driving on the AP-7 highway near Figueres found an individual inside a Porsche Cayenne at a rest area who, upon seeing them, fled. When approaching the vehicle, which the fugitive had left open, the officers found various documents. Upon opening the trunk, they found two sacks containing a dozen long war weapons, which would be Kalashnikov rifles, popularly known as AK-74s, according to sources close to the case.

The events took place around two in the morning at the rest area at kilometer 24 of the AP-7 heading south. Traffic officers alerted the situation and several patrols were dispatched to the location. The Porsche was preserved to take fingerprints and both it and the war weapons were taken to the Basic Police Area (ABP) facilities in Figueres. On Wednesday morning, according to Mossos sources, forensic agents were inspecting the rifles to confirm they were real and they were deposited in the ABP bunker, a secured place where drugs and materials seized from criminal acts are stored.
DIC agents have opened an investigation to try to locate the man whose documents were found in the vehicle, to find out who owns the AK-74s — a Soviet assault rifle introduced in 1974 as a modernized version of the AK-47 — and what their final destination was.
