Jacobo Miranda Mata, a resident of the city of Armilla (Granada 25,300 inhabitants), died past noon this Thursday while cycling with some members of his cycling club. A citizen called the 112 phone number after 12:30 p.m. to request help following a truck running over a cyclist who, he said, had serious injuries, the Andalusian Emergency Agency reported in a statement.

The medical personnel who arrived to assist him could do nothing, and the man died at the scene of the accident. The Civil Guard is investigating the circumstances of the incident. So far, no further details have emerged about what happened at that roundabout, located at kilometer 23 of the GR-30 highway, which circles the capital of Granada and provides access to the town of Otura.

Jacobo Miranda Mata was 69 years old and had a very long career in the sports world of his town. The Armilla City Council has publicly expressed its condolences for this death by issuing a statement explaining that he was a “very beloved resident and an essential figure to understand the recent history of cycling in our city.” The deceased athlete belonged to the Armilla Cycling Club. According to the City Council, he was a “reference in cycling in the province of Granada” and even had a race named after his family, the Trofeo Hermanos Miranda.
