A group of young ultras brutally attack two left-wing activists in Oviedo

Two activists from the Moza d’Asturies Association (AMA) were brutally attacked last night in Oviedo by a group of young ultras when both tried to prevent them from tearing down the rainbow LGTBI flag placed on their booth at the San Mateo festivities located in the cathedral square.

The attack occurred after three in the morning, on the first day of the festivities, when the former Councilor of Economy and Finance Rubén Rosón, from Somos Oviedo, and Jorge Fernández, both doctors, were organizing materials after the booth had closed.

At that moment, according to witnesses, a group of eight young people approached chanting racist and xenophobic slogans and began to hit the booth, tear down posters, the rainbow flag, and a banner with the slogan “Let racism not invade us.”

Jorge Fernández and Rubén Rosón tried to stop this, and the ultras began insulting them with expressions like “faggots, fucking reds” and punched and kicked them on the ground, according to the victims’ account and as can be seen in a video recorded by a citizen and later uploaded to social media. After the attack, the group of ultras left the area shouting “Arriba España.”

The two assaulted were taken to the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) where, after a scan and several stitches in the case of Rubén Rosón, they were discharged. Both have filed complaints at police stations.

Social response

As soon as the attack became known, messages of condemnation followed from the municipal, regional, and national political spheres, trade unions, and social movements, among others.

The Minister of Health, Mónica García, a fellow professional of the assaulted doctors, expressed all her affection to those affected on her social networks. “All the strength to the AMA Asturies activists after the fascist attack in Oviedo, which shows that hate speeches do not stay at the podium: they are the breeding ground for violence on the street,” the minister said.

The condemnation message from the minister was joined by that of the President of the Principality, the socialist Adrián Barbón, who, in addition to conveying personal support to the victims ―which he extended on behalf of the Asturian Socialist Federation (FSA)― urged that the full weight of the law fall on the aggressors: “Democracy is in retreat. The democratic values that promote peaceful and free coexistence, too. It started with polarization and tension. Then came insults. Then verbal aggression. Now, physical aggression. What happened in Oviedo is a good example, with a group of violent people attacking well-known left-wing activists from Oviedo yesterday.”

In that post, the president called for a public condemnation from political organizations and emphasized that it should be “all of them.” AMA framed the attack in a particularly delicate moment given the hate messages pronounced by right-wing and far-right parties. “We do not forget the context in which the attack occurred, with a municipal government of the PP whose first measure was to remove the rainbow benches from Escandalera. Some remove the rainbow benches from the government, and others try to emulate them by tearing the rainbow from the booths. They are a radicalized minority by the speeches launched in the media by PP and VOX,” sources from Fiestes Populares said.

In any case, these same sources say, the attack will not condition either the rest of the festivities or their stance and defense of the symbols. “If the rainbow bothers them, they will have a city full of color; a violent minority will not make us return to gray times. Throughout San Mateo, we will increase our presence by holding acts of rejection against fascist violence and in favor of a multicolored city. We encourage all citizens to celebrate Uviéu [Oviedo] with rainbows,” they stated.

Ama Asturies has called for a condemnation rally this Saturday at seven in the evening in the Cathedral Square. “These cowards need to know that there are more of us who defend Human Rights and fight against racism, xenophobia, and fascism,” the group explained.

“Against their violence and hatred, our joy. We will not stop demanding a more humane, welcoming, inclusive, and fascism-free city,” the assaulted also defended.
