A Russian ballistic missile attack has killed at least 12 people and injured another thirty in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, during the early hours of this Thursday, according to authorities. The bombing has damaged buildings and interrupted the power supply in some areas of the Ukrainian capital. A fire caused by the impact of the projectiles has destroyed the upper floors of a nine-story residential building in the Solomianskii district, where seven people have lost their lives, according to information from the city mayor, Vitali Klitschko, who called for Friday to be a national day of mourning.

Two other districts also suffered damage, Klitschko reported via the Telegram messaging app, affecting non-residential buildings, warehouses, a school, and a children’s hospital. The electric company DTEK has reported that it has restored power to more than half of the approximately 90,000 homes that were left without electricity in the capital after the attack.
Russia has intensified its air attacks against Ukraine in recent months, trying to take advantage of the severe shortage of interceptors in its smaller neighbor to shoot down ballistic missiles. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that Moscow has attacked Kyiv and the surrounding region with missiles and drones, hitting drone component production facilities, a military depot, and a logistics center, among other targets.
A Reuters witness reported hearing more than a dozen explosions. In the region surrounding the Ukrainian capital, another person has died, according to an official on Telegram. The Ukrainian emergency service has shown a video of soldiers fighting a fire in a building and helping people escape from the facilities destroyed overnight in Kyiv.

Ukraine has also increased its attacks against Russia, targeting oil facilities and logistical infrastructure to try to undermine Moscow’s ability to wage war. Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to achieve a lasting ceasefire in the war, which began with Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Also this Thursday, a drone crashed in Romania, a NATO and European Union member, during the Russian attack on Ukraine, the Romanian Ministry of Defense reported on Thursday. Another attack device also crossed Moldovan airspace, according to the country’s military.
