At least 12 people died and another 10 were seriously injured in the early hours of this Sunday in an accident involving a Polish tourist bus in Hungary, near the city of Mezokeresztes, in the east of the country. According to local police, the accident occurred after midnight when the driver allegedly fell asleep and the vehicle, carrying 57 tourists and 2 drivers, derailed, overturning into the ditch of the M3 highway.

The ambulance service, for its part, reported that 47 people were hospitalized in the cities of Miskolc, Debrecen, and Nyíregyháza, most with minor injuries. Nine injured are in serious condition and one is very serious, added the portal Telex.hu. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar expressed his condolences to the families of the accident victims.
The local press adds that many people were crushed under the bus, which weighs 24 tons. The police have reported that the driver has been detained after the accident. The M3 highway remains closed to traffic until the rescue operations are completed.
Images from the scene show a heavily damaged red bus, lying on its side in a ditch next to the highway, with shattered windows and belongings and suitcases scattered around. “A bus registered in Poland traveling on the M3 highway towards Nyíregyháza… left the straight section of the road, fell into a ditch, and overturned. Preliminary information suggests that it is likely the driver fell asleep,” the police stated on their website.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki declared on day X: “I have received with deep sorrow the tragic news of the Polish bus accident in Hungary, in which so many of our compatriots have died.”
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski stated on day X that a “tragic accident” had occurred in Hungary involving a bus carrying Polish tourists. “The consular service is operational. We are in contact with Hungarian authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide verified information,” he said.
