The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, is pursued by the controversy of the penthouse that the regional government bought in April in the Chamberí neighborhood. The name Planifica Madrid, unknown to most until July, has also become uncomfortable for her, who seems not to want to know more about the property located on the ninth floor of number 35 General Martínez Campos promenade with almost 200 square meters of terrace. “It is for sale, chao ‘pescao’, there is not much more that can be done,” she responded this Monday to journalists’ questions about this acquisition during her visit to the Virgen de la Nueva recreational area of the San Juan reservoir, in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, heavily affected by the fires in the Sierra Oeste.
In this way, she avoided the clash with Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the PP, who in a recent interview declared that the Heritage of the Community of Madrid will have to explain why it bought a penthouse that cannot be used as an office with the interest that an office would be located precisely there. He conveyed this after assuring that he knew since April that “places were being sought” to move the office of the regional president and that “remodeling works” would be undertaken because “there were problems” with the pipes, air conditioning, or building maintenance, something that seems far from a “unique artistic performance,” as reflected by the Community of Madrid to award the design project of the reform, days after this newspaper discovered the purchase of the penthouse, which appeared in the Property Registry.
“I think we have already said everything, if they keep asking one by one, each politician who comes on vacation, it is obvious that each one has a new headline, but it is the same again, it is a property intended for offices, which can also house offices, by the way, as they have on other floors of any property of those characteristics and it is in a sales process, ‘chao’, that’s it,” Ayuso argued, trying to close the topic, not without first attacking her political opponents: “They have tried to link it with a residence and there is none, again the opposition crashes in a new attempt to do the same as always, which is to lash out, to tangle, but they will achieve absolutely nothing, because everything I say can be proven.”
The luxury penthouse in the Chamberí neighborhood bought by the Community of Madrid cost 6.3 million euros, an expense that surprises because it was not planned in Planifica Madrid’s 2026 budget, which did detail other property sales or new construction investments meticulously. The Government Council also did not grant a credit extension for the purchase of this property (something necessary to incur this type of expense) and, more importantly, Planifica Madrid did not report the acquisition on its transparency page. However, for Díaz Ayuso, “this gum cannot be stretched any further” no matter how many times she is asked about this matter. “We could go on like this until June next year,” she snapped.
