Barcelona is experiencing the warmest start to September since public records began. And that means going back more than a century, to 1914. According to the Fabra Observatory, the Catalan capital recorded a temperature of 35.5 degrees this morning. That is well above the 34.1 degrees reached yesterday and means breaking the temperature record for a September month once again. The forecasts from the Catalan Meteorological Service indicate that, for now, this new heat wave will last until next Wednesday.
Barcelona has been one of the cities where thermometers have climbed the most this Saturday. But not the only one. Many points in Catalonia have again exceeded 40 degrees, especially in the regions of the Ebro, Lleida, Camp de Tarragona, and the interior of the province of Barcelona. Alcarràs (Segrià, 41.2 degrees), Lleida (40.4 degrees), and Masroig (Priorat, 40.2 degrees) have been above that limit.

Nor do the thermometers ease at night on the coast, leaving a scorching climate especially in Barcelona. The minimum temperature this Saturday, in fact, is 24.5 degrees, according to the observatory. Given the persistence of this heat wave, Civil Protection maintains the intense heat alert for the entire weekend and for the high risk of forest fire. In fact, two residential areas had to be evacuated this Saturday due to a fire in the town of Tordera (Maresme). However, firefighters managed to stabilize that fire around noon.
