The Barcelona City Council observed a minute of silence this Thursday, joined by the Minister of Equality and Feminisms, Eva Menor, in protest against the latest murder of a woman in the city at the hands of her partner on the 28th, which raises to 32 the victims of gender-based violence in Spain this year.

The full corporation, led by Mayor Jaume Collboni, gathered in Sant Jaume square as a sign of condemnation. The Minister of Equality and Feminism, Eva Menor, also attended the minute of silence in front of the town hall, where a poster was hung on the facade reading: “Barcelona rejects gender-based violence. Not one less!”.
In statements to journalists, Menor condemned those who deny the existence of gender-based violence and stated that “it is a reality that exists, a serious violation of human rights and a collective failure that calls on all of us.” “We will not take a step back,” she assured, after encouraging all women who feel threatened to use the resources available to them, such as the helpline that is active 24 hours or the itinerant purple points.

The woman murdered on Tuesday in the Sant Martí district, aged 34, is the 1,373rd victim in Spain and the 163rd in Catalonia since 2003, when these data began to be collected. The confessed killer, who is detained, stabbed his wife several times. Officers received a call on Tuesday at 7:47 p.m. about an assault at a home on Andrade street. The man parked his van in front of the building, went upstairs, and repeatedly stabbed the victim. He did so, according to sources in the case, while the couple’s children, aged eight and four, were present in the home. After stabbing her, the man hurriedly left the house, got into the van, and fled. Meanwhile, the older child left the house shouting and asking neighbors for help. The escape was short-lived. The man parked the van in the Navas neighborhood, which he allegedly set on fire. Then, somehow, he went to the Eixample police station of the Mossos d’Esquadra in Barcelona, where he surrendered after one in the morning.
