“Dressing is often an act of self-protection: we accumulate symbols, references, and trends as if they were shields that legitimize us before others,” explained Domingo Rodríguez Lázaro, creative director of Dominnico from Alicante, in a press release before the show celebrating the tenth anniversary of his brand. His label, born in Barcelona in 2016, has dressed pop stars and pop culture icons like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Rosalía. And in his show, held this Wednesday within the 080 Barcelona Fashion runway, he combined the theatricality of the stages — evident in the black puffed skirt design worn by stylist, model, and dj Sita Abellán — with pragmatic and functional silhouettes (from trench coats to biker jackets) in the collection, called Soft Armor. “I would say all the effort has been worth it. When we work in fashion, the timelines are impossible, we have an idea, a concept, a vision that has to materialize. In this show, we aimed not only to celebrate the anniversary but to mark the beginning of an era, referencing pieces that have been part of the brand’s journey while also taking a step towards something perhaps more functional, balancing the commercial with the more eccentric, theatrical,” the designer explained to S Moda, summarizing what he felt during the show.

For the creative, the goal is for his garments to permeate everyday life, for the concepts they convey to integrate into real life: “It’s super important not only that you like fashion conceptually, but that you can be part of it. And when I say be part of it, I mean you can be part of it working in an office or you can be part of it going out for a drink, without having to place wearing fashion in a specific space or event, as we usually do.”

Many familiar faces appeared on the Dominnico runway, but also figures who have marked the brand’s decade-long history, like Kristina Petkovik. “She is my muse, the model with whom I started in Alicante 10 years ago, and there she was on the runway, like Muriel Seiquer, who is also another iconic model for us. We wanted to bring back those who have been part of the brand and with whom we have created a community,” Rodríguez Lázaro noted. Santa K, Clara Courel, and Violet Chachki walked with the brand’s garments, and TV collaborator and socialite Carmen Lomana appeared hand in hand with singer Metrika (known on social media as “founding mother,” one of the guests in Rosalía’s Lux Tour confessional). One wore a long leather trench coat; the other, a version of the design with a jacket and shorts. “It shows the search for the ageless, the fact that our clothes can accompany several generations without having to be limited to a specific life moment,” the designer said, “Carmen, wonderful with that trench coat, and Metrika with a leather biker inspired by the nineties. We seek that moment of opposites that can coexist and evolve with the brand.”

For Rodríguez Lázaro, the garments and accessories are an “emotional armor,” with nods to medieval style reinterpreted in evening armors, loose tops, and voluminous dresses. “We represent ourselves to the world through clothing, and this collection celebrates the journey of a brand by generating that identity,” emphasized the creator. Additionally, some garments and accessories became technological designs in his show, with seven pieces integrating Samsung devices. Since its beginnings, the brand has been defined by its genderless character, its commitment to slow fashion, and the research of processes and materials. Its first collection, Unusual Dichotomy, was presented in Budapest within the European Fashion Union, and now, 10 years later, it wanted to show the evolution of its approach at 080 Barcelona Fashion, a runway that has always bet on a combination of emerging talent, risk, and established brands.

Models Jessica Goicoechea and Marta Camín (who advocated on her social media for the presence of curvy models on runways, marked this year in various fashion weeks by extreme thinness) walked with colorful looks, in fuchsia and pastel blue, that Soft Armor call that “proposes a new reading of strength through sensitivity,” according to the brand, with pastel tones freed from their innocence burden and leather and fur stripped of aggressiveness, “a balanced tension between opposites” reflected in monochrome looks. In fact, transforming duality into a manifesto served as a summary of the brand’s spirit on this tenth anniversary for the creative director: “It seems like a dream to me to generate monochrome looks again, which are easy to reinterpret. There is a lot of intentionality in the fact that these pieces are fun and daring, as we have always done, but that they can also have that part of desire and functionality.”
