Judge Zamarriego agrees that the National Court will take over the ‘Leire Díez case’

The Madrid court led by Judge Arturo Zamarriego has accepted that the National Court take charge of the investigation it had open since July 2025 against former PSOE member Leire Díez for her alleged maneuvers against the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, which later included the alleged bribes offered to members of the public ministry. This step will allow these investigations to be unified with those carried out by Judge Santiago Pedraz, who last December began investigating Díez for leading an alleged “plot to destabilize” various “judicial proceedings affecting” the PSOE and the Government.

Zamarriego has agreed to transfer the investigation to the National Court after the Prosecutor’s Office expressed support for this body to assume the entire case. Prosecutor Rosa Calvo considers that Judge Pedraz has “amply” justified that the facts he is investigating are “broader” than those accumulated in the Madrid court. “Given the close connection between both cases, inhibition must be agreed,” she stated in the document she submitted on August 6, which this newspaper has accessed.

Furthermore, the public ministry representative has indicated that it is appropriate for Zamarriego to transfer the case to Pedraz as soon as possible, so she has urged the Madrid judge to cancel the proceeding scheduled for August 20. On that day, the recording provided to the case by prosecutor Ignacio Stampa, who through the Prosecutor’s Office denounced Díez for attempted bribery, was to be dumped. Prosecutor Calvo understands that it is “not essential” to carry out this dumping to “clean” the recording, since this “does not determine the reality of the meeting” nor its content or the authorship of the facts. Now, in an order signed on Tuesday that EL PAÍS has accessed, Zamarriego acts in line with the Prosecutor’s Office’s criteria and cancels the appointment set for next week.

In recent months, the defense of the former member filed several appeals to try to annul and block the part of the procedure opened in the National Court. In their view, this court violated legality by opening a “parallel” case for the “same facts” for which she was already charged since July 2025 in the Madrid court.
