The high-profile and prolonged confrontation between the protagonists of Breaking the Circle (2024) already has its first economic consequence: the judge has ruled that actor and filmmaker Justin Baldoni (42 years old, Los Angeles) must pay $400,000 to his co-star in the film, Blake Lively (39 years old, Los Angeles), for the expenses of her legal battle over inappropriate behavior and defamation, which they agreed to resolve before going to trial.

The judge in the case, Lewis Leman, ruled this Wednesday, August 26, on the amount Baldoni, who was also the director of the film, must pay Lively for defense and other legal expenses, which includes about $363,000 in attorney fees. However, this amount is much lower than the nearly eight million dollars the actress claimed. Leman considers that Lively is entitled to a “reasonable” reimbursement, given the importance of the case and its complexity, but he cites several examples where she did not adequately justify the expenses she claimed.
Baldoni’s defense has reacted positively to the decision, considering it a “victory” since the amount to be paid is 5% of what Lively claimed. “The ruling represents a significant victory for my clients and sends a clear message that, no matter how powerful one is, the courts are not the place to exploit the law for personal gain,” said Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, in statements collected by Variety. Meanwhile, the actress’s defense has also claimed success for delivering “real consequences for filing retaliation lawsuits.” “As we have said from day one, Blake Lively’s case was never about money, but about accountability,” said her lawyers, Esra Hudson and Michael Gottlieb, in statements to the same entertainment industry outlet. Blake Lively filed a complaint against Justin Baldoni in December 2024, accusing him of inappropriate behavior during the filming of the movie and of workplace, sexual, and personal harassment, as well as carrying out a smear campaign against her in retaliation for her complaints. The judge dismissed most of the accusations made by the actress last April, including the harassment, defamation, and conspiracy claims, and the agreement between the actors signed in early May 2026 after 18 months of confrontation to avoid going to trial — which was scheduled for that same month — resolved the remaining breach of contract and retaliation claims. “We acknowledge that the process posed challenges and that the concerns raised by Lively deserved to be heard. We remain firmly committed to creating workplaces free of inappropriate conduct and lack of productivity,” said the joint statement sent in May about their agreement, the details of which have not been disclosed.
