Nestlé announces layoffs of up to 7% of its workforce in Spain

The layoffs that Nestlé announced globally at the end of last year are reaching Spain. This Tuesday, through a statement, the Swiss multinational announced the start of a collective dismissal procedure (ERE) in our country. Specifically, Nestlé will lay off a maximum of 301 workers out of the total of 4,158 that make up its Spanish workforce, meaning the adjustment is 7%.

According to the company, the measure responds to the evolution of its sector —that of mass consumption— which is being affected by “the increase in operating costs, changing consumer habits, and the advance of private label brands.” Nestlé argues that this context “drives the need to adapt the company to current market challenges and to move towards a more efficient, agile model focused on its strategic brands, through the automation and digitalization of processes, to ensure business viability and long-term value generation.”

Specifically, the layoffs of the 301 workers will affect office positions, sales teams, distribution centers, and six of its production centers in the country. Specifically, the measure will be applied in the centers of Pontecesures (Pontevedra), Sebares (Asturias), La Penilla (Cantabria), Miajadas (Cáceres), Reus (Tarragona), and Girona.

The company has specified that it has already informed its workers about the ERE. Now, the negotiation process with their legal representatives will be activated, with the aim of exploring measures that minimize the impact on employment and offering support to the affected professionals.

Nestlé is present in 185 countries worldwide and has 271,000 employees. In mid-October 2025, the first measure of Nestlé’s new management team, headed by Pablo Isla as chairman and Philipp Navratil as CEO, was the announcement of a plan for 16,000 layoffs over the next two years, almost 6% of its total workforce. These layoffs in Spain are part of that announcement, which caused the company’s shares to soar 9.3% on the stock market that day.

In Spain, Nestlé closed the 2025 financial year with sales of 2,894 million euros, an increase of 12% compared to the previous year’s figure. Globally, the Swiss group ended 2025 with total sales of 89,490 million Swiss francs, approximately 98,700 million euros, which implies a 2% decrease compared to the previous year. Net profit was 9,033 million Swiss francs, 9,900 million euros, a 17% decrease, due to drops in margins and operating profits.
