The unemployment rate falls below 10% again in the second quarter, the lowest since 2008

The second quarter of the year usually brings good news to the Spanish labor market and this year, despite the turbulent geopolitical scenario triggered by the attack of the United States and Israel on Iran, has been no exception. Between April and June, employment grew by 486,000 new jobs, with the total number of people working in Spain setting a new record and reaching 22,779,000, after just a year ago the 22 million workers with employment were surpassed for the first time, according to the Active Population Survey (EPA) corresponding to the second quarter of the year published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). With this, the unemployment rate falls again below 10%, specifically to 9.87%, the lowest since 2008.

Furthermore, this decrease in the unemployment rate, after it again exceeded the 10% barrier in the first quarter of the year, is recorded with the active population at a maximum after strongly increasing by 272,700 people compared to the first quarter and by 452,500 in the last year, reaching the record figure of 25,274,300 people. The Ministry of Economy also highlights that the total number of employed in seasonally adjusted terms, which remove the effect of seasonal employment, very present in this quarter due to the Easter week activity and the advance of summer hiring, also marks a record of 22,669,300.

These data correspond to the good figures recorded by Social Security affiliation in the second quarter, in which it gained almost 600,000 contributors. Tourism activity and other services have marked employment in these months, as practically nine out of ten new jobs are in the tertiary sector, which added almost 400,000 new workers. Construction also generated 56,600 more jobs in the second quarter and industry, 38,200 more. Only agriculture recorded a slight loss of 6,200 jobs.

The strength of this job creation is also reflected in the fact that households with all their active members employed grow by 228,800 to 12.2 million. While those with all unemployed decrease by 86,500 to 32,700.
