Mexican police and the Armed Forces arrested Hungarian drug trafficker János Balla alias Dániel Takács in Cancun (Quintana Roo). The arrested man was one of the 10 most wanted fugitives in Europe, according to Omar García Harfuch, federal Secretary of Security, this Saturday. The Central European criminal had an Interpol and Europol red notice, the official highlighted. He was also wanted by Budapest authorities for allegedly coordinating a cocaine and ecstasy trafficking network, according to the Mexican newspaper Reforma.

In a brief statement, the Government affirmed that Balla is in the custody of the National Migration Institute “in order to determine his migratory status and continue his controlled deportation process to Europe.” The Executive has not clarified what he was doing or how long he had been within Mexican territory. The text, however, did highlight that his location was possible after an “exchange of information with Hungarian security agencies.”
Agents from the federal Security Secretariat, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the National Migration Institute (INM), and Quintana Roo authorities participated in the operation. Despite being one of the country’s most important tourist hubs, the southern state, where Cancun is located, has been a target for Mexican drug trafficking and international criminals. The presence of this cocktail has led to a security crisis in the region.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s Government, with Harfuch as the visible head of the security strategy, has redoubled its efforts to dismantle criminal groups and collaborate with the US and other countries. In fact, in early April, Remigio N, alias El Milo, alleged operational and financial coordinator of the Cuban-American Mafia criminal group, was also arrested in Cancun. The arrested man has an extradition order from Washington for belonging to a gang dedicated to the illegal transfer of migrants to the United States. A month earlier, Mexican authorities captured Samuel Ramírez Jr., one of the 10 most wanted fugitives by the FBI, in Culiacán, Sinaloa.
