A pyrotechnic shell veered off course last night during the fireworks display at the Castell de l’Olla in Altea (Alicante) and caused 27 injuries of varying severity, according to sources from the Brotherhood that organizes this event. At least 11 of the injured had to be taken to hospitals in Alicante and Villajoyosa with burns, and the rest were treated for bruises, according to data provided by both the organizers and the Emergency Information and Coordination Center (CICU) of the Valencian Community.

The Castell de l’Olla is one of the most popular events held during the month of August in the province of Alicante. It is a fireworks castle launched from floating platforms installed in the sea and attracts thousands of attendees, who gather both on the beaches of the tourist town of Alicante, neighboring Benidorm, and on boats anchored near its coast. In this year’s edition, the launch of 1,600 kilos of gunpowder was announced, the largest amount ever used in the history of this show.

Last night’s accident occurred due to the unexpected trajectory of the shell, which struck a group of spectators on the beach. The Brotherhood initially reported that the total number of injured was 27, of whom 14 had been taken to the Imed Hospital, a private center responsible for the medical service at the event, from which 11 injured were transferred to the Burn Unit of the Doctor Balmis Hospital in Alicante. Meanwhile, public health personnel transferred three people who were at the health center in Altea: two of them, a 55-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman with burns, to the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa, and a third, 19 years old, with bruises to Imed.
