The Mossos d’Esquadra arrested Jonathan Andic this Tuesday as a suspect in the alleged homicide of his father, the owner of Mango, Isak Andic, who died after falling down a path on the Montserrat mountain on December 14, 2024. Jonathan was under investigation in a case under judicial secrecy, and the Catalan police have now decided to arrest him as a preliminary step to bring him before the judge.
The arrest took place in the morning at the house where Jonathan lives, after months of speculation about the possibility of him being arrested or directly summoned to testify before the judge. The Mossos finally opted for the arrest, although only with the aim of taking him to Martorell (Barcelona) and placing him at the judge’s disposal, who must take his statement as a suspect. The Andik family has stated that Jonathan is testifying “within the framework of the proceedings of the December 14, 2024 accident,” that he cannot provide information because the investigation is under judicial secrecy, and that his cooperation with justice “has been and will be maximum.”
The Catalan police have considered Jonathan Andic a suspect in his father’s death at least since October of last year. After noting a series of contradictions in the two statements he gave as a witness, the investigators went further. Upon leaving the Mango headquarters, they requested Jonathan’s mobile phone, which he voluntarily handed over. Since then, they have been analyzing the device looking for messages that could prove a possible motive for the alleged crime.
Isak Andic died, at 71 years old, during a hike on Montserrat mountain accompanied only by Jonathan, the eldest of his three children. The founder of Mango fell from a height of more than 100 meters. The Mossos initially investigated the incident as a mere mountain accident. But the inquiries changed direction, especially due to contradictions in Jonathan’s testimonies. The investigation has established that father and son had a sometimes conflictive relationship, especially regarding Jonathan’s role in the company’s management. Isak Andic decided to leave the company’s management in the hands of his eldest son in 2014, but had to return a year later to form a new team and revive it. That rushed succession did not work and, according to investigation sources, it damaged the relationship between them.
But family relations also became strained after the businessman’s death. The wife and children started a dispute over the inheritance. The last will that Andic signed before a notary, in July 2023, established an equitable distribution of the inheritance among the three children and also included a legacy, specifying that certain amounts of money and assets should be given to certain people. The businessman — the richest man in Catalonia with an estimated fortune of 4.5 billion, according to Forbes — left his partner five million, a figure the woman considered insufficient and claimed 70 million. After arduous negotiations, the children and the partner reached a preliminary agreement to leave the amount at about 30 million.
