The People’s Party of Catalonia is preparing the call for its next congress on June 27, where it will have to decide who will lead the party. At the closing of the party’s Board of Directors meeting, a prelude to the conclave, the PP’s secretary general, Miguel Tellado, asked Alejandro Fernández to run for re-election as president. “I want to encourage you to run for re-election as president if you feel strong enough,” he told him after taking his testimony before the microphone, a message that took on the tone of showing unity in the party after the differences that surfaced in the past, from which Fernández has never hidden.

Tellado made that proposal on the condition that he has “the strength, enthusiasm, and leadership necessary” for the People’s Party to surpass its current record in Catalonia in the next electoral cycle: 15 deputies in the Parliament and 6 in the Congress. He made that observation after assuring that the party is making “a display of unity” and is “a tight-knit group at the service of Catalans.”
In his speech, Fernández never let slip his intention to run for re-election as president, although he consistently used the first person plural to refer to the party’s commitments and objectives. One of them, he pointed out, is “to build political change in Spain from Catalonia” from an alternative point “to nationalism and the left in Catalonia.”
With different examples, pointing to Salvador Illa’s PSC, Fernández lamented that a “dismantling of the State” is taking place in Catalonia and emphasized that self-government is only possible through loyalty and trust. He also pointed out as a rarity that the party, which has governed Spain and other European countries through acronyms integrated into the European People’s Party, has never governed the autonomous community.
The silence shown so far by Alejandro Fernández contrasts with that of the spokesperson for the People’s Party (PP) in the Parliament, Juan Fernández, who is emerging as the new secretary general of the Catalan formation. The June congress has been pending since 2022. The official argument for the delay lies in the continuous elections that the State and autonomous communities have undergone, but the confrontational atmosphere between the Catalan and national leadership, now redirected, has also made it impossible.
This Sunday the PP approved the different phases of the schedule for its next congress. June 1 is the deadline to submit candidacies, which must be accompanied, to be validated, by 300 members. If there is more than one candidacy, the internal electoral campaign will launch on June 3, lasting 12 days. It is planned that during the Congress two reports will be prepared, one political and another on the party’s regulations.
