United States resumes avocado imports from Mexico after a week of suspended activities in Michoacán

The United States resumed the importation of avocados from Michoacán this Thursday, according to the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson. The decision comes a week after the northern neighbor halted the import of the fruit due to violence from criminal groups in the Mexican state, which led the Claudia Sheinbaum government to implement security measures. “Following the security measures implemented in Michoacán by the Government of Mexico and our assessment of the conditions on the ground, the United States Government will fully resume its official activities in Michoacán as of August 13, 2026,” Johnson stated in a written statement.

The capture in Jalisco at the end of July of Ramón Álvarez Ayala, El R1, a regional leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in Michoacán, sparked a wave of violence in the avocado-producing state, which led to the departure of U.S. supervisors from the region. This was confirmed by the governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, who said their departure was a “preventive measure” by Washington due to the insecurity climate. Ramírez Bedolla emphasized then that El R1, Álvarez Ayala, was “one of the most important extortionists in the Michoacán region.”
