A Spanish exchange student died on Saturday night in a stabbing attack in Cuautla, Morelos (in central Mexico). The assault on Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, 21, occurred in an alleged robbery outside the local Casa de la Cultura. The Morelos Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the crime as femicide and has not ruled out any line of inquiry. “Immediately, contact was made with the Spanish Consulate by the Prosecutor’s Office,” reported prosecutor Fernando Blumenkron Escobar.
The student from the University of Granada had been on exchange for a month at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), according to the institution’s statement. According to local press, she had gone to the Casa de la Cultura for the National Medicinal Plant Festival and was attacked nearby, prompting her to ask for help from event attendees. The student died before emergency services arrived to assist her.

“The UAEM demands that the Morelos State Attorney General’s Office and the competent authorities conduct an immediate, thorough investigation with a strict gender perspective to guarantee justice and prevent impunity,” the Mexican university stated in the communiqué.
