Ambrosio, a former blind coupon seller who lived in Ubrique (Cádiz, 16,615 inhabitants), had very marked daily routines. He left home almost every day and walked from his house to the bus stop. From there he went to a house in the countryside that he had in Tavizna, a rural area of the Sierra de Cádiz, about 7.8 kilometers away; he liked to spend time there, taking care of his animals and a vegetable garden. His brother found him in that house on September 27, lifeless, in a storage room. His body had received 70 stab wounds in an attempt to make him reveal the code to his safe, which he did not do. He ended up dying from severe bleeding, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
Ambrosio was retired and enjoyed a good financial position. He handled money from his earnings when he sold coupons and also had hospitality businesses, the same sources indicate. During the inspection of his home, the Civil Guard agents verified that they had searched every corner and found blood traces in different rooms. The safe embedded in the wall had been tampered with, but they had not managed to open it.
Paulo, a Colombian man about 30 years old, has been arrested as the main suspect in the illegal detention, torture, and death of Ambrosio. He is the son of a woman who had worked as the coupon seller’s caregiver and who also had a romantic relationship with the deceased, although it had ended some time ago. When Ambrosio’s body was found, the investigations focused on the mother and son, but the investigation required its own time to proceed steadily, the consulted sources indicate.
Paulo testified as a witness and days later left for Colombia. Investigators emphasize the agility and diligence with which the Ubrique court has acted. When the time was right, this small and overloaded court handled the processing of the International Arrest Warrant for the main suspect, which has made the investigation faster.

Paulo was arrested in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) almost four months later. The Colombian National Police stopped him on February 2 when he was returning from buying some cartons of eggs. Upon seeing two officers pointing their weapons at him, he crouched down to put the purchase on the ground and took off his cap with an almost automatic gesture. Then, he lifted his red shirt so they could check that he was unarmed. After his arrest, he was taken into custody in the Colombian prison La Picota, in Bogotá. In prison, he will wait for his extradition to Spain to be resolved.
Almost immediately after the Colombian police arrested Paulo, his mother was arrested in Ubrique as a “necessary collaborator” in Ambrosio’s death. Two officers traveled to Colombia at the end of April to participate in home searches looking for evidence, such as sharp objects or clothing that the main suspect might have worn during the crime. This Monday, the Civil Guard has declared the investigation closed.
