A 14-year-old teenager kills her mother with a hammer in Santiago and goes to school before confessing the crime the next day

A 14-year-old teenager hit her mother with a hammer until causing her death. The events occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, in San Joaquín, a municipality in the southern area of Santiago de Chile, inside the apartment where both lived, according to the minor’s confession this Monday afternoon before the 3rd Police Station of Santiago de Carabineros. Hours after the crime, she slept in the place where the body was, covered it with a sheet, and the next day went to classes at her school.

The events are being investigated by the Southern Homicide Brigade of the Investigations Police (PDI) and, according to the account given by the teenager, she hit her mother during an argument. According to Radio Biobío, the minor told the officers that she took a hammer that was on a sofa and then hit the woman several times, who fell to the floor of the apartment, and that she saw abundant blood at the scene.

Two hours later, at 2:15 p.m., after changing clothes because they were stained with blood, the minor left the apartment, located on the 13th floor of a building at the intersection of Vicuña Mackenna Avenue and Celia Solar Street, to meet her father, since he was separated from her mother. Upon returning, around 11:00 p.m., the teenager told the police that she found the woman lying on the floor, deceased, although she reported the events the next day, upon returning from school, when “she reported that she had been the author of that parricide crime,” said Deputy Superintendent Robert Briones, head of the Southern Homicide Brigade of Santiago.

The teenager is in custody, after the PDI went to the apartment and found the woman’s body. According to Deputy Superintendent Briones, “the victim of the parricide crime is 48 years old and has various blunt injuries, caused by a blunt object, whose perpetrator would be her daughter, a minor.”

Briones stated that, after the teenager’s arrest, “all pertinent procedures are being carried out to establish the motivation of this minor, since it must be determined if there is any type of rights violation against her and also to determine if there are other people who may have participated in the act,” but he added that so far, “we have established that the woman victim of this act would have only been in the apartment with the accused.”

The crime has shocked Chile, as it is the second case of parricide occurring in two months. Last June, in Loncoche, a small town in the south of the country, a 17-year-old girl ordered the murder of her mother, Ingrid del Carmen Barrera Rantul, 53 years old, who opposed the romantic relationship she had with a schoolmate of the same age. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, both contacted a friend to kill the woman, offering a payment of 60,000 Chilean pesos (about 67 dollars). The woman’s body was found with 80 injuries, including fractures and stab wounds.
