Citlalli Hernández resigns from the Secretariat of Women to help Morena towards the 2027 elections

The Secretary of Women, Citlalli Hernández, has submitted her resignation to the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. The president announced this Thursday that the politician made the decision after speaking with the president of Morena, Luisa María Alcalde, and has decided to “help Morena” and the Executive Committee ahead of the 2027 elections in the alliance process, as she did in the elections two years ago. For now, the Government has not announced who will take her place nor what aspirations the now former secretary has expressed.

Sheinbaum detailed in her morning press conference that when Hernández communicated her decision and handed in her resignation this Wednesday, she “almost fell backwards.” “She told me: I spoke with Luisa María and I want to go help the party,” the president said about the change that takes effect this Friday. “In 2024 she helped with the alliances, coordinating the entire alliance process, and I understand that Luisa María asked her if she could help her and the Executive Committee with these tasks,” the president said. When asked by this newspaper, Hernández assured that she was invited by the party a few days ago. However, she did not specify which team she will join nor if she will seek any electoral candidacy in the midterm elections that have already caused several departures in Morena’s Cabinet. “I will inform you who will replace her and tell Citla that she always has a place here in our Government. And how valuable she is to the Fourth Transformation movement,” Sheinbaum added and recalled that anyone who wants to run for candidacy in the midterm elections must resign from their position in the Executive. “What we don’t want is for someone to be working in the Government and campaigning at the same time. Also, it’s not yet campaign season, but since the survey process in Morena starts in June, many people are already making decisions like the leaves taken in the Senate,” she explained. The president called to respect electoral laws and not to get ahead amid the atmosphere of changes in her party. “So far no one has come to me saying they want to run for candidacy, but if so, they necessarily have to leave the Government,” she insisted.

Citlalli Hernández had been leading Morena’s Secretariat since August 2024, when the president announced the creation of this branch of her Government to replace the National Institute of Women (Inmujeres), created in 2001 during Vicente Fox’s presidency (2000-2006). The one who until then had been a senator and Morena’s secretary general with a loyal profile to the party and close to the militant bases took on the task of creating a national care system, distributing booklets on women’s rights, and combating and preventing gender violence.

The president has described her performance in charge of this portfolio as “exceptional” and addressed Hernández as a “brilliant and hardworking young woman.” “In this year and a half she distributed 25 million booklets on women’s rights, the Constitution was amended, she worked with collectives, attended to victims, reached 500 or more free centers. The network of homeland weavers, also, exceptionally. She is a woman of great conviction, honest, hardworking,” the president enumerated.
