Education requests 100% minimum services for PAU evaluators during the Valencian educational strike

The regional Secretary of Universities of the Generalitat Valenciana, Esther Gómez, in her capacity as president of the Managing Commission of the University Entrance Exam (PAU), has requested from the Directorate General of Labor 100% minimum services for the teaching staff designated as members of the PAU evaluation tribunals, whose first test is scheduled between June 2 and 4. The request was made one day after the threat of a mass resignation by nearly 250 professors responsible for grading the exams emerged, due to the indefinite strike called by the main unions in non-university public education.

The measure by the regional secretary aims to guarantee the holding of university entrance exams in June and July 2026 and to protect the fundamental right to education of Valencian students as set out in Article 27 of the Spanish Constitution, the department reported this Wednesday in a statement.

“The PAU is not an administrative formality, it is the most important moment in the academic trajectory of thousands of young Valencians who have been working for years to get here,” said the regional Secretary of Universities. Furthermore, Gómez assured that her “constitutional obligation” is to ensure that they can take the exam under “conditions of equality, merit, and ability, exactly the same as the rest of the students in Spain.”

The proposal for 100% minimum services is based on three pillars, according to the Department: the fundamental right to education enshrined in the Spanish Constitution, the state regulations on university access, and the endorsement of the TSJCV from May 11, 2026.

“It should be remembered that the Fourth Section of the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the TSJCV endorsed the minimum services dictated by the Conselleria for educational centers, recognizing that the general interest of the students facing the PAU is paramount and that there is a significant general interest in ensuring that all these students face this test without further incidents, uncertainties, or anxieties,” the statement detailed.

This measure, the regional Secretary of Universities pointed out, “does not empty the content of the teachers’ right to strike, it balances it against the fundamental right to education. We act with the sole purpose of protecting those who have no responsibility in this conflict. Our obligation is not to fail the students who have so much at stake.” Therefore, the ordinary call for the PAU will be held, as planned, from June 2 to 4.
