Personally, in my 5 years of continuous breastfeeding, what I have used most is a hands-free electric breast pump, but the truth is that I have also regularly resorted to a manual model when I have traveled and did not need to store milk —only to relieve engorgement—. Unlike electric models, which have a motor that creates a vacuum and achieves milk extraction, in manual models we ourselves have to activate this effect continuously by pressing a lever or knob. For this reason, manual pumps are cheaper than electric models and also completely silent.
How we chose and tested the manual breast pumps
To choose the four manual breast pump models participating in this comparison, I consulted with the main brands which, incidentally, do not have too many references for this type of product. My daughter is currently two and a half years old and nurses only once or twice a day, and I took the opportunity to perform the tests right after waking up, massaging well first to achieve milk ejection (these models do not have a stimulation mode). In addition, I also tested their results by taking advantage of the ejection reflex when breastfeeding the child with the other breast, to facilitate milk flow. My goal has never been to extract a large quantity, but rather to relieve breast engorgement.
With this, I have evaluated aspects such as:
- Design. Regarding their ergonomics when holding them, and how they adapt to different breast types and nipple sizes.
- Cleaning. How the parts are assembled, if they are easy to put together and take apart, and how they are washed.

Why we recommend it: its lever has two positions with the idea of mimicking the baby’s sucking rhythm: first a fast stimulation phase and then a slower extraction phase. So when I used it, I usually started with short pulses that help activate milk flow and then moved on to longer, slower pressures. I have noticed that with this system I extract more than with other models, and also faster.
The oval shape of its funnel adapts to the contour of the breast, allowing it to be rotated 360 to adapt it to the most comfortable angle to press the lever and extract milk: completely vertical, slightly tilted… I, for example, like it completely vertical. In addition, it has a padded edge that is appreciated for caring for the skin of the breast and, as it reduces pressure on the milk ducts, helps more milk to flow. The included cup is size M —which suits me well—, but if a larger or smaller one is needed, it must be purchased separately.
Its PersonalFit Flex cushion with 105° opening and soft rim is size M (24 mm).
Its weak points: you have to get the hang of the double lever for this function to be useful.
2) Constant suction: Chicco Manual Breast Pump
Who is it for: those who want to reduce the number of containers used, as it can be used directly as a bottle or to store milk in the refrigerator.
Why we recommend it: its coated handle makes it pleasant to operate, while its soft silicone cup helped make contact with my skin more pleasant than with other models I have tried in the past. Although it is not my case, the fact that it can be used directly by adding the teat as a bottle makes it a very useful model for deferred breastfeeding. What I have done is put the airtight lid on to store the milk in the fridge.
What I liked most about this Chicco model is the feeling of constant and natural suction thanks to the membrane system used by the brand, which in my case helped make extraction more effective in short sessions.
Its weak points: it is somewhat heavier than other models, and you notice it when you have been using it for a while.
3) Comfortable breast pump: Philips Avent SCF430
Who is it for: women who will use it for deferred breastfeeding.
Why we recommend it: it stands out for its ease of assembly: it has few parts and cleaning has been quick. In addition, the milk is extracted directly into the bottle, so if it were to be used immediately, it would be enough to put on the teat. Otherwise, it is possible to store it in this container or, what I have done, use a bag for freezing.
What I liked most about this breast pump is its silicone cushion in the cup, which adapts to practically all nipple sizes and is very gentle on the delicate skin of the breast. It doesn’t hurt and since it fits very well, you are not tempted to squeeze too hard, which would make the milk come out worse. Its lever is also very comfortable, because it is soft and my hand didn’t get as tired using it as with other models.
It stands out for the possibility of storing the extracted milk directly in a bottle from the brand itself, and then simply attaching the teat and giving it to the baby. In addition, an adapter can be used to use it directly with storage containers. It is very easy to assemble and disassemble, with screw-type attachments, and is equally easy to wash, even in the dishwasher. Its cushion is one size fits all.

Its weak points: I have noticed that on some occasions it does not seal completely well and some drops have fallen out of the breast pump onto the breast, but nothing important.
4) Manual breast pump with carry bag: Suavinex
Who is it for: women who will habitually carry it in their bag or backpack, as they will have their own carry bag (in addition to other accessories).
Why we recommend it: from the first moment I was struck by how compact and lightweight the breast pump is. I have carried it in my bag several times and it takes up practically no space. In addition, I was able to assemble and disassemble it without looking at the instructions, because everything is very intuitive. I also like its ergonomic shape and anatomical cup, which fits well to the breast and helps the extractor stay better positioned and reduces the possibility of drips or unexpected movements during extraction. Personally, this was evident to me when I used it walking around the house: the shape of the cup reduces the need to constantly readjust the position, and I didn’t spill a drop. As it consists of few parts and smooth surfaces, I cleaned it quickly under the tap after each use in a matter of seconds.

Its weak points: the cup is not as soft as in other models and, on some occasions when I have squeezed a little too hard, it has left a mark.
