The Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico (SRE), Roberto Velasco Álvarez, has reported this Monday that Israel has detained Mexican citizens who were participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea. “We demand, particularly from the Israeli authorities, full respect for the human rights of our compatriots,” he has demanded in a request for respect for their physical integrity and dignified treatment, as well as immediate consular access. On board the intercepted vessels were activists Violeta Núñez Rodríguez, Sol González Eguía, and Paulina del Castillo Poblano, but the Global Movement to Gaza organization assures that, due to the lack of communication with the Israeli authorities, there could be more Mexican citizens detained.

The SRE has assured that it is already in contact with the families of those affected and has activated consular teams in Israel to manage the legal situation of the detainees and provide them with support. They have also coordinated with representatives of other countries that have detained citizens, including Spaniards, French, Italians, Poles, and Malaysians, among other nationalities. “We will not rest until we ensure their protection and a prompt solution,” Velasco emphasized. Meanwhile, activist organizations have called for a march in protest of the detentions this Thursday in Mexico City with the intention of applying media pressure from the Monument to the Revolution to free the Mexicans.
The Israeli Army began the detentions in the early hours of this Monday. The first ship captured was the mother ship Furleto, followed by the Ziofaster and Holy Blue. Gradually, more interceptions of ships have been confirmed and loss of communication with others until more than thirty vessels were affected. The rest of the ships, about 20 of the total that made up the flotilla, are currently maintaining their course to reach Gaza.

Violeta Núñez Rodríguez, journalist and professor, was traveling aboard Venus when she was intercepted. “My kidnapping shows once again how far the Israeli regime and its sponsors go to control with their siege and genocide,” she said in a video posted on social media showing her Mexican passport. Psychologist Sol González Eguía, part of the same delegation, was also aboard the same vessel. Paulina del Castillo Poblano, a pro-Palestinian activist, has also posted a video in which she narrates that she has been kidnapped by the State of Israel and asks the public to pressure President Claudia Sheinbaum to take a stand against the war.
