Unfinished 1937 air-raid shelter found in Barcelona's l’Abaceria market

Archaeological work carried out in the vicinity of Barcelona’s l’Abaceria market has revealed the presence of an unfinished air-raid shelter which, according to preserved documentation, dates from 1937 and would have been used during the Civil War. The Barcelona City Council has reported that it is a gallery-type structure, of which a section of about 68 meters has been preserved, with a width of about 1.10 meters and a height of 2 meters, with capacity for about 240 people.

Its characteristics suggest that it could correspond to shelter R.0230, used during the Passive Defense of Barcelona and financed by public subsidy, although it could be an unfinished work as it does not present cladding in some sections.

The discovery makes it possible to differentiate this structure from another shelter documented a few years ago under the l’Abaceria market, corresponding to a different construction and which could be identified with shelters 1195 or 0008.

Given that the structure is not fully finished and in some places the clays are crushed, once the shelter is documented, it will be closed with a register to make it accessible for possible inspections carried out by technical personnel.
