The Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) will host on September 7, 8, and 9 in Santander the summer course How is a newspaper made? 50 years of EL PAÍS, a seminar framed within the celebration of the half-century of the newspaper’s birth, in which a dozen of its managers will explain to the attendees the intricacies of the newsroom’s operation.

The course, which will be held on the Magdalena Peninsula in Santander, where the historic headquarters of the UIMP is located, will start on Monday, September 7 with the talk The day-to-day of a newspaper, given by the deputy director of EL PAÍS, Miguel Jiménez. Next, the chief editors of International, Guillermo Altares, and Spain, Inma Carretero, as well as the editor of EL PAÍS SEMANAL Pablo Ordaz will talk about the management of two of the newspaper’s central sections in times of constant changes, as well as about the newspaper’s second speed – represented in its Sunday supplement -, in a meeting titled Either I no longer understand what is happening or what I was understanding has already happened. Ordaz will lead a journalism workshop that same afternoon.
The seminar will resume on September 8 with the event Inform, educate… and entertain, led by the heads of three of the newspaper’s magazines: Belinda Saile, chief editor of EL PAÍS SEMANAL, Sofía Ruiz de Velasco, director of S Moda, and Daniel García, director of ICON. Mid-morning will feature the meeting Who cares about science topics?, led by Javier Salas, chief editor of Society and Science, and Patricia Fernández de Lis, former head of Science and founder of Materia. In the afternoon, EL PAÍS SEMANAL editor Jesús Ruiz Mantilla will give an interview workshop.
Wednesday, September 9 will begin with the event Always with the readers, led by Ana Lorite, who has been the newspaper’s Reader Ombudsman since July. It will continue with The collective intellectual, which will address the work in the Culture and Opinion sections with two former heads of the latter, Javier Rodríguez Marcos and Máriam Martínez-Bascuñán.
The course, coordinated by EL PAÍS Communication Director Pedro Zuazua, costs 157.5 euros and provides 1.5 ECTS credits.
